This guy was the same age as Cotton Mather, and went to school with him, both to Boston Latin School, and to Harvard. Cotton's father Increase was President of Harvard in the 1690s, before the witch trials, and hired John to be a tutor. But Increase got called away and in his absence Cotton got carried away up in Salem. John, our hero, said nothing; Increase was his boss. He was writing Logic textbooks in Latin at the time; he later became President of Harvard, much to Cotton Mather's chagrin.

This book is a biography of John Leverett (1662-1724), first secular President of Harvard, who kept Harvard from becoming a Puritan Divinity School when that was what Cotton Mather and orthodox Puritans wanted. It was a very divided time in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Mather had seen his unquestioned support fade after the witch trials of 1692. The story gives an overview of his illustrious grandfather, Governor of the Colony, a father who had trouble making a living, and deaths in the family, one after another, as was usual in a time of smallpox and other diseases, hard winters, inadequate water, and various other problems. Leverett designed Massachusetts Hall, which survives today as Harvard's oldest building, and holds its President.

#8 Japanese Poetry & Haiku

This may be outdated by the time you read this, but the fact that this book got #8 in its Japanese Poetry & Haiku category at least for part of a day is worthy of note.

I was horrified to see that haiku written by Chat GPT was #4 in the same list. It's probably higher now, since, out of curiosity I downloaded it; it like mine is on Kindle Unlimited. It's terrible though. It's not even really haiku, although, hey, maybe I'm the wrong person to be drawing this line.

Follow the links and take a look at mine, if you have the chance. It's worth it, just to beat the Chat GPT version. Your download will make a difference!
